As the Winter sets in…..

December 28th, 2011

Christmas is over and the long cold months ahead of us suggest different things to different travel nurses.

Some of you want to get away from it. Those nurses start dreaming of warm weather travel nursing jobs in places like Phoenix, Los Angeles or Hawaii. Others start thinking a place like Idaho or Colorado might fit their need to get right in the middle of it and get some skiing in.

The great thing is that there are travel nursing jobs in all of those places and more.

Each week I publish an email newsletter which has about 25 new travel nursing jobs and links on how to get further information on them. They come from an assortment of travel nursing agencies and of course are far from a complete listing of what is available.

You can also find postings at two of my websites, Nursetown and TravelnursingUSA.

Have fun dreaming!

Yosemite. What does THIS have to do with travel nursing?

December 5th, 2011

I took this picture early last Summer on a visit to Yosemite National Park. In my opinion this is one of the most beautiful places in the entire United States.

Early Summer is my preferred time to go because the snow packs are melting and the water falls are at their peak.

Travel nursing jobs? Well, the connection here is that Yosemite is within a couple of hours driving of several major California cities. They include Sacramento, Fresno, San Jose and San Francisco. All of these cities regularly post travel nursing jobs on this site and in my newsletter.

Want to see Yosemite? Fill out this short request form and we’ll try to match you up with a travel nursing agency that gets you close.

Good luck! - Conrad

Where do I live when I am on a travel nursing assignment?

November 30th, 2011

Virtually all agencies provide you free, furnishged housing for the duration of your assignment. It is commonly an apartment located near the facility you will be working at. (Be sure to verify this though).

Alternatively, you can ask the agency to simply give you a housing allowance while you are working at your travel nursing job. You are then free to make your own arrangements.

Where you live is an important part of your lifestyle so do not gloss over this when dealing with the travel nursing agency. If you can, ask for some references and address the quality of the housing with other travel nurses from this agency.

Can a friend or spouse go on a travel nursing job together?

November 5th, 2011

Let me tell you something. When you call a travel nursing agency and tell them you are an RN with a year of experience and you are interested in a travel nursing job, they get excited. You are just what they are looking for.

About the only thing that gets them MORE excited is when you say there are two of you that want a traveling nurse job! Travel nursing agencies are always looking for experienced nurses who have the desire, experience and wherewithall to take a travel nursing assignment.

Nursing School in Hawaii

October 23rd, 2011

There is an interesting new nursing academy which has been set up as joint venture between the University of Hawaii Nursing School and the Veterans Administration Health System. It has nothing to do with travel nursing (unless you are an LPN who wants to become a registered nurse so you can get a travel nursing job), but it is a unique and interesting project you may want to learn more about. For more details go HERE.

Can I take a pet with me on a travel nursing job?

September 14th, 2011

Yes you can. There are some caveats to this, though. #1, you need to bring this up with your recruiter at the travel nursing agency. They need to know up front that your housing issues are a bit different then most other travel nursing jobs situations. It is just like renting an apartment. If you have a pet they may have restrictions or may want you to post a pet deposit. Don’t expect your travel nursing agency to do this.

Remember this, too. While pets are nice company for you, you aren’t much company for a pet when you are out working a shift. If the pet is going to be alone a lot you may want to rethink taking them with you. If you are traveling with others who will be with the pet when you are working, that’s another story.

Hope this answers your question. And if you want further information on a high paying travel nursing job, fill out the short form here and I will personally make sure a few travel nursing recruiters see it and get back to you if they have a fit.

Travel Nursing and RVs

August 15th, 2011

I’m not really sure how many travel nurses actually do this but apparently there are some of you out there. I recently got a question about how you could find an assignment near an RV park. Here are my thoughts.

What I would do is figure out a couple of locations, towns, that have an RV park you would like to b e in.There are lots of guides out there that can help you with this step. One of them is CampUSA. Get a couple of options to give the travel nurse recruiters some flexibility. Once you’ve done this, go to our “Request Information” form and fill it out paying close attention to letting the recruiters know you are looking at living in your RV. (Do that in the comments section).

What happens next is that your form is forwarded to several subscribing travel nursing agencies who can then try to match up your query with what travel nursing opportunities they currently have available. It beats the heck out individually contacting these agencies one a time! And it is a free service we offer to travel nurses and “wannabe” travel nurses.

Something fun to do when you take a travel nursing job

July 6th, 2011

I recently discovered a neat little Internet service that let’s you download a digital photo from your computer and then they will turn it into a physical postcard, let you address it and write a short message on it and then create it, stamp it and mail it for you.

It’s a fun way to share your travel nursing adventure with friends and family back home.

To read more about it check my blog AskConrad.com.

What happens when my assignment is up?

June 14th, 2011

I want to leave my current state and move to another one. Could I take a travel position where I want to go and then stay there after my term ends?

Normally you will have the option of extending your assignment. This isn’t guaranteed as it depends greatly on the needs of the hospital an how well you performed in your travel nursing assignment. Very often the agency will actually pay you a bonus to renew as it is much more cost effective for them to have you there longer then the thirteen weeks.

Another thing you want to check in your agency contract is what happens if you want to take a permanent position with the facility.

LVNs and Travel Nursing

April 10th, 2011

There is a lot of interest in this subject. I get emails all of the time from LVNs and LPNs who want to travel.

Here is the problem. Everything in our economy is about supply and demand. One of the things that fuels the travel nursing phenomenon’s is the shortage of RNs. It is expensive for a hospital to pay for travel nurses. They do it because they have no other alternative. there just are not enough RNs to go around.

LVNs/LPNs are generally not as hard to find locally and pay the normal pay scales. I get a lot of angry emails from them who tell me they are “just as important” and that they feel slighted because some of the same benefits of travel are not afforded them. This is not the case. It is simple that the local supply is sufficient to fill most (not all) of the demand.

So  what should you do if you are an LPN and you want to travel?

1. There are occasionally travel jobs for LPNs. You must be persistent in looking for them, you will probably have to be at the top end of experience, and you should be less picky about destinations.

2. Consider becoming an RN.  There are online programs that allow LPNs to take the courses at their own pace, in the leisure of their own home. One of them I know of is here. You can click on this link and get free information it. Another path may be a local community college.

That’s it for now. If you have any questions please post a comment and I will try and answer you right away.
