Some of you want to get away from it. Those nurses start dreaming of warm weather travel nursing jobs in places like Phoenix, Los Angeles or Hawaii. Others start thinking a place like Idaho or Colorado might fit their need to get right in the middle of it and get some skiing in.

The great thing is that there are travel nursing jobs in all of those places and more.

Alternatively, you can ask the agency to simply give you a housing allowance while you are working at your travel nursing job. You are then free to make your own arrangements.

Where you live is an important part of your lifestyle so do not gloss over this when dealing with the travel nursing agency. If you can, ask for some references and address the quality of the housing with other travel nurses from this agency.

About the only thing that gets them MORE excited is when you say there are two of you that want a traveling nurse job! Travel nursing agencies are always looking for experienced nurses who have the desire, experience and wherewithall to take a travel nursing assignment.

Remember this, too. While pets are nice company for you, you aren’t much company for a pet when you are out working a shift. If the pet is going to be alone a lot you may want to rethink taking them with you. If you are traveling with others who will be with the pet when you are working, that’s another story.

What I would do is figure out a couple of locations, towns, that have an RV park you would like to b e in.There are lots of guides out there that can help you with this step. One of them is CampUSA. Get a couple of options to give the travel nurse recruiters some flexibility. Once you’ve done this, go to our “Request Information” form and fill it out paying close attention to letting the recruiters know you are looking at living in your RV. (Do that in the comments section).

What happens next is that your form is forwarded to several subscribing travel nursing agencies who can then try to match up your query with what travel nursing opportunities they currently have available. It beats the heck out individually contacting these agencies one a time! And it is a free service we offer to travel nurses and “wannabe” travel nurses.

Normally you will have the option of extending your assignment. This isn’t guaranteed as it depends greatly on the needs of the hospital an how well you performed in your travel nursing assignment. Very often the agency will actually pay you a bonus to renew as it is much more cost effective for them to have you there longer then the thirteen weeks.

Another thing you want to check in your agency contract is what happens if you want to take a permanent position with the facility.

Here is the problem. Everything in our economy is about supply and demand. One of the things that fuels the travel nursing phenomenon’s is the shortage of RNs. It is expensive for a hospital to pay for travel nurses. They do it because they have no other alternative. there just are not enough RNs to go around.

LVNs/LPNs are generally not as hard to find locally and pay the normal pay scales. I get a lot of angry emails from them who tell me they are “just as important” and that they feel slighted because some of the same benefits of travel are not afforded them. This is not the case. It is simple that the local supply is sufficient to fill most (not all) of the demand.

So  what should you do if you are an LPN and you want to travel?

1. There are occasionally travel jobs for LPNs. You must be persistent in looking for them, you will probably have to be at the top end of experience, and you should be less picky about destinations.

2. Consider becoming an RN.  There are online programs that allow LPNs to take the courses at their own pace, in the leisure of their own home. One of them I know of is here. You can click on this link and get free information it. Another path may be a local community college.
