Los Angeles Area

December 18, 2014 | By Conrad Lopez | Leave a Comment

This past week I visited the Los Angeles area where of course there are many, many travel nursing jobs.

Everyone thinks of Southern California as a beach area and it does not disapoint. I visited an area called “the Southbay” IMG_1651which is ripe with some of the best beaches around. Redondo, Hermosa and Manhattan Beach are all lined up just outside of the City and each of them has an almost quaint beachtown atmosphere. Lots of great shopping and fun night life.

The beaches themselves are magnificent. Volleyball is king here and there are nets everywhere. Surfers love this area and sunbathers are treated to some of the widest beaches I’ve seen in California.

The best place to see it all is by taking a stroll on “the Strand”, a wide walkway that stretches for miles along the beach as you walk from town to town. Joggers, strollers, bikers, skaters and walkers are all abundant and there is room for everyone.

If you would like to get information on a travel nursing assignment in this area you can get more information here.

Northern California anyone?

Are you a travel nurse in the San Francisco Bay area?

Or would you like to be?

There are literally hundreds of good reasons to look for a travel nursing job in this beautiful part of California. You could do four straight 13 week travel nursing assignments and go somewhere every single weekend and still not see everything this world class area has to offer.

One of those great places to visit is Mendocino, a beautiful somewhat secluded area about two hours North of “the City” (as MendocinoSan Francisco denizens call it). It is a fantastic drive through part of the “wine country” and as you approach the coast you begin to drive through huge stands of majestic redwoods. You can stop for a taste of wine in the famous Anderson Valley….a favorite of mine is the Navarro Winery…and before you know it you burst through the trees onto a magnificent, rugged coastline.

Mendocino is sitting right there on the bluffs looking over the Pacific. It is very quaint with many top notch restaurants and affordable Bed and Breakfasts, lots of art for sale from the locals, and great hiking trails amongst the redwoods. It looks like a village from the Northeast and in fact, the television show “Murder She Wrote” was filmed here. Another famous local story is that the Alan Alda movie “Same Time Next Year” was filmed here. (Every hotel and B&B seems to have a copy of it, lol).

Mendocino

Mendocino, California

I took this picture early one morning in the Fall while taking a short hike practically right downtown! What a beautiful place!

There are often travel nursing jobs in nearby Ft. Bragg and of course many, many travel nursing jobs in San Francisco. This is just a hop, skip and a jump from there.

If you would like to get my latest Free Report and request information on getting a travel nursing job here (or anywhere else) head over here and give me your email.

How can you find nursing jobs in the UK?

August 12, 2014 | By Conrad Lopez | 2 Comments

Nursing Jobs in the UK-

I get lots of questions about international travel nursing jobs. My site generally is focused on travel nursing in the USA (and occasionally Canada)London so my expertise on this subject is somewhat limited. I reached out to Brit Peacock and asked if he could tell us a little about the process of an American citizen getting nursing jobs in the UK.

The process seems somewhat more complicated then just getting a travel nursing job in another state here in the US but that is to be expected. If you are interested in this it certainly can be done. You should note that these are regular, full time nursing jobs as opposed to what we traditionally think of as travel nursing.

Brit has also included some links to actual jobs and how to get an information packet. I hope you find this useful. -Conrad

BTW, if you would like to see some of my personal experiences in the UK you can read about my recent visit there in my Travel Journal section HERE.

How to find work in the British National Health Service

In the last three years Britain’s National Health Service has seen the number of foreign nurses it employs double, so what exactly is drawing them to the UK? Many international nurses choose to work in England or its neighbouring countries to enjoy their unique culture, excellent educational facilities and competitive wages. These temptations have been supplemented by a nationally funded drive to recruit workers from overseas. One third of National Health Service (NHS) trusts have recruited foreign nursing staff. 40 of the 105 nationwide NHS trusts that replied to a Freedom of Information request from the Nursing Times magazine had actively sought to employ nursing staff from overseas, and a further 41 planned to follow their example. A large number of the trusts who responded had targeted European countries but several more had looked further afield – to the USA, Philippines, Australia and India. According to a spokesperson from the UK government’s Department of Health, a policy of overseas recruitment has been in place for a long time. He stated that: “Recruiting from abroad is nothing new. Overseas nurses make a very valuable contribution to NHS patient care.” If you are interested in securing employment in the UK, here are a few tips to get you started.

NMC Registration If you’re considering nursing in the UK, then you’ll be required to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) before you can find employment. In order to obtain registered status, there are three stages you will need to complete.

#1 Information Pack To obtain an information pack, you must either write to the NMC so that they can post one to you, or download one from their website. The application pack you receive will detail the information you must send to the NMC in order for them to assess your eligibility for registration. This will include: a registration certificate, birth certificate, copies of diplomas, references from previous employers, and a transcript of your training from your training provider, detailing the amount of practical training you’ve received.

#2 Payment To proceed with your application you’ll need to complete the application and send it to the NMC, along with the relevant documents and a fee of GB£120, which at today’s exchange rate is approximately US$202.

#3 Assessment Once received, your application will be processed by the NMC. Their assessment may take a long time, and you should allow a minimum period of 3 months for a decision to be made. During this time, the NMC will attempt to verify the information your have provided and determine the adequacy of your education and training, compared to an equivalent UK nurse.

Decisions After assessing your application, the NMC will come to one of three decisions: acceptance onto the NMC register, signalling permission to practice; rejection, if your education and training levels are not believed to meet the required standard; or a request to complete a period of supervised practice. If the latter is decided, you will be expected to find a placement where you can be supervised for between 3 to 6 months in order to assess your competency, before a final decision is made.

Finding NHS Job Vacancies If you are accepted onto the NMC’s register, then it’s time to look for jobs. In the UK, all NHS jobs are advertised on the NHS Jobs website. A large amount of advice and guidance on the process is available from the Royal College of Nursing, to support applicants throughout the process. This includes everything from guidelines on good recruitment and employment practices, to information regarding the regulation of nurses in the UK, support available for them and a list of useful contacts and resources. To change your life today, visit their website to see what’s on offer.

A thought about travel nurses at Christmas

December 25, 2009 | By Conrad Lopez | Leave a Comment

A lot of you travel nurses are working today. You are away from home and are serving others so their life may be better. It can be a sad time and I’d like you to know some of us out here understand and appreciate the sacrafices you are making. Yep, travel nursing isn’t all fun and games.

It is Christmas morning and I am waiting for the kids to wake up and attack the Christmas tree. I had a wonderful Christmas Eve with some of my family last night and as I sit here waiting to enjoy a nice Christmas morning it makes me reflect on the time I was away from friends and family one Christmas a long, long time ago.

It was December, 1967. I was a young Marine serving along the DMZ during the Vietnam war. I had just been released from the hospital after being wounded at Con Thien and then coming down with a severe case of malaria. Not the best time of my life. There was a “cease fire” for the Christmas holiday, (pretty funny concept when you spend the days trying to kill each other), but we were not really sure the enemy would play by the rules.

It was night, Christmas Eve, and the chaplain had gathered us as a group and said Mass. We were all standing there, a bunch of young Marines in our combat gear with our M16 rifles slung over our shoulders. The chaplain began leading us in Christmas carols. The sad moment that stuck in my mind, and comes back to me every Christmas, was when we started singing “Silent Night.” I began feeling so sad. So sorry for myself. All I could think of was my family at home in their warm little house having a wonderful Christmas. And here I was in this damn hellhole.

Eventually I realized that we were doing something important. What we were doing was one of the reasons those folks back home got to have such a wonderful holiday. I swung into the spirit of the song and ended up feeling a little better about things. Every Christmas, including last evening at Mass when we sung “Silent Night” I get teary eyed remembering all of the people in the world who are doing things to make other lives better and sacrificing their holiday.

I include nurses, and especially travel nurses, in that group. Thank you to all of you for doing what you do.

We love you for it.

Happy holidays.

Are there any travel nursing jobs in………..?

November 5, 2009 | By Conrad Lopez | Leave a Comment

Are there any travel nursing jobs in Atlanta?

Are there any travel nursing jobs in Lubbock?

Are there any travel nursing jobs in California?

I get these questions constantly so I thought I would write a quick post and remind you how to really find out if there are traveling nurse jobs in the city you are interested in.

One way to find out is to get on the phone and call agency after agency asking your question.

The easiest way, however, is to go to one of the travel nursing sites that offer to forward your application and/or questions to a variety of travel nursing agencies. This is a free service. Here is how it works.

Go to one of these sites, (I will list a few at the end of this blog post). Fill out the short "request information form". They will then forward your information and your questions to a number of agencies, usually 5-10 of them. The agencies will look over your request and a few of them will usually contact you, hopefully with travel nurse job possibilities. It is a very efficient way to get your questions answered.

Here are a few sites you can do this at:

Nursetown.com

TravelNursingUSA.com

AAAtravelnursing.com

And if you are a therapist here is a site with travel therapist jobs.

TraveltherapistUSA.com

Good luck!

Are there travel nursing jobs in Hawaii?

October 7, 2009 | By Conrad Lopez | Leave a Comment

Are ther travel nursing jobs in Hawaii? If so what is it like there?

Hi Carmen and thanks for the question. Yes there are travel nursing assignments in Hawaii. Honolulu is a major city with several large hospitals and like most big facilities they have a nursing shortage. The second part of your question is a little more complicated. Without knowing you personally it is hard to advise. Let me tell you some things I know about the place (I actually lived there for a year when I was younger).

I’m going to talk about Honolulu since that is where the majority of the traveling nurse jobs are in Hawaii.

Honolulu is located on the island of Oahu. The famous Waikiki Beach is located on this island as is Pearl Harbor. There is a good public transportation system and lot’s of affordable housing, (though that part is normally taken care of by your travel nursing agency). Some people like busy beaches and lot’s of nightlife and some people like more isolated beaches and quiet. Oahu has both of them.

Waikiki Beach is normally full of the tourist crowd and the bars and clubs reflect that in the evenings. If that is your thing there are lots of fun places like Dukes, the Beach Bar at the Moana Hotel (ten feet from the beach), the list goes on and on. The beach itself is world famous and on it you can get everything from surfing lessons to parasailing to sunset cruises.

Close by is Kapiolani Park which is a quieter area walking distance from central Waikiki. There is sunny beach and shady grass. There’s even a zoo there.

Farther around the island you will find tons of spectacular beaches and picnic areas to spend the day at.

Young or old there is plenty to do and if you get tired of Oahu you can always catch an inter island flight and spend a weekend on Maui or one of the other islands. It is about 30 minutes by air and very inexpensive.

I love Hawaii. Can you tell? I’ve been visiting there for over 40 years and never fail to enjoy myself.

If you want a travel nurse job there you might try looking at TravelnursingUSA or Nursetown. If you are a therapist you may look at TraveltherapistUSA.com.

Good luck! If you have any questions on this or anything else drop me an email at conrad@gmail.com.

Wher should I take the Boards?

August 24, 2009 | By Conrad Lopez | Leave a Comment

Hello! My name is Raina. I am about to graduate a registered nurse program in NY on October 9th 2009. I plan to take my boards immediatly following, and am interested in moving to the Tampa Florida area by February 2010. I have a few questions I was wondering if you could help me with. I have been searching the internet and have not had much luck in trying to figure out how to go about this. If I take my boards in NY, will that transfer to Fl or will I be better off just taking them there if possible? Do I qualify for a traveling nurse position? I really appericate your time and if you do not have the answers to my questions, could you recommend someone that could answer them for my? Thank-you!

Hi Raina. Congratulations on your impending graduation. Let’s start with the boards question. I always refer people to the state board where they are going to end up working. Every state is different, things change, and I’m just not comfortable giving that advice. You can find them on the Internet at http://www.doh.state.fl.us/mqa/nursing/. My strong hunch, though, is that you are better off doing this in Florida if that is where you are going to live.

As for travel nursing jobs, virtually all agencies require a year of experience. Right now the number of travel openings has tightened up so they are being even more picky. I’d suggest that as alternative a little later in your career. I think think the supply of travel positions will likely loosen up next year.

Good luck!

Interested in a travel nursing job in San Francisco?

August 21, 2009 | By Conrad Lopez | Leave a Comment

One of my client agencies, Trustaff, has a pretty nice opening in San Francisco. I have a very soft spot in my heart for that city. I have traveled all over the world to some of the great cities out there…..Paris, Sydney, Saigon, Dublin, NYC…..on and on. And guess what? San Francisco does not take a back seat to ANY of them. I live about 30 miles South of the City and visit there often.

You may want to look into this one.

ICU.CCU RN, San Francisco. 13 Week Travel opening.

Good luck! If that one is taken, my friend Bridgette may have something else you might like.

Are You Interested in NYC for a travel nursing job?

August 11, 2009 | By Conrad Lopez | Leave a Comment

Not many places have as many things to do as the "Big Apple" and if you take a travel nursing job in the New York City area you should be sure to take full advantage of it. All tourist visits to the city seem to start at Times Square. Be sure to visit at night. The light show is beyond description. People from all over the world are strolliong the area, eating and drinking in a myriad of establishments, and shopping at the wide variety of tourist stores that are in this neighborhood. If you have kids with you you have to take them to the Toys R Us store there. It has a full blown ferris wheel INSIDE the store. I could not believe my eyes.

For more upscale shopping head over to Fifth Avenue. Be sure to bring your travel nursing bonus with you as these are world class stores. Even if you are not going to buy anything it is worth the trip to just stroll the Avenue. A few blocks up from the shopping is Central Park, a must see when visiting the city. Splurge for a few bucks and get a horse drwn carriage or a pedicycle tour of the park.

Broadway plays, Rockefeller Center, St. Patricks Cathedral and Bryant Park are just a few of the things to do in New York City.

And if you are looking for a travel nursing job in NYC visit TravelnursingUSA.com.

New Nursing Academy in Hawaii

June 22, 2009 | By Conrad Lopez | Leave a Comment

In a unique collaboration, the VA Nursing Academy has selected Hawaii as a site for a new nursing academy starting in the 2009-2010 academic year. The VA Pacific Islands Health Care System will work together with the University of Hawaii School of Nursing. Students in this new nursing program will get some of their clinical training at the Honolulu VA Medical Center and additional training at Tripler Army Medical Center.

According to the VA, "The results will be more compassionate, highly trained nurses serving the health care needs of our veterans, through the enhancement of their professional and scholarly development."

This looks like another great way to beef up the nursing education pipeline, in my opinion, one of the major reasons for the nursing shortages in the United States. The Baby Boomers are coming and the healthcare system had better get ready.

BTW, another of the problems with the educational pipeline is finding qualified nursing instructors. If you have your BSN and would like to get get your MSN so you can consider this career path there is information HERE on doing that online.

DO you offer positions close to accredited RV parks for those of us whom travel via Motor home?

May 15, 2009 | By Conrad Lopez | Leave a Comment

DO you offer positions close to accredited RV parks for those of us whom travel via Motor home?

Well I am neither an agency nor a recruiter so the short answer is "no." However I think I can tell you some shortcuts to getting information on some of these positions.

There are a couple of ways I would go about this. One would be to start with the RV park you have in mind. Identify the town or community you are interested in that has an RV park you think is up to your long term living standards. Then I would go to AAAtravelnursing.com or TravelnursingUSA.com and fill out the form paying close attention in the "comments" section telling us exactly what you are looking for. Make it clear that you are an RV traveler and that this is important.

This form is then distributed to several different travel nursing agencies, one of whom will likely have a fit for you.

If you don’t have a particular RV park in mind you can go through the same process but make it very, very clear you need an RV park for the assignment.

Personally, I think the most effective route would be for you to choose the RV park and community first. You may even want to give yourself several options so the recruiters have a little flexibility.

Good luck!

Visiting Las Vegas

January 21, 2009 | By Conrad Lopez | Leave a Comment

There are lots of travel nursing jobs in Las Vegas. Given the harsh Winter it may be worth taking a look at either a destination in or around Las Vegas or even taking a traveling nursing assignment in somewhere in California. It is a short one hour plus flight to LV from about anywhere in California and you can drive there in a matter of a few hours from the LA area.

I just spent a quick weekend there with my wife and if you considering a brief respite let me give you a few tips and observations.

I stayed at an absolutely wonderful hotel called Bellagios. It is right on the strip and close to a lot of famous hotels and attractions. It is a little bit more money then some of the others but for my taste it is worth the extra jingle. Some of the alternatives that are close by are" New York, New York", Paris, Treasure Island, the Wynn, MGM Grand and Planet Hollywood. We spent the day Saturday walking up and down the "strip" and visiting the various hotels and their casinos. Each one seems to have a bigger and better theme. My favorite was Paris and the Eiffel Tower. We rode the elevator to the top at dusk and were able to watch the famous water show at Bellagios from 50 stories up. It is remarkably close to the real Eiffel experience! It is great fun for only $10.00.

You may also want to see New York, New York. There are tons of pubs and restaurants. ESPN Zone feels like you are right in Times Square. Nine Fine Irishmen is a pub that literally has the real feel of a Dublin pub, right down to the Guinness, (poured correctly when I was there).

Nightlife is legendary in Vegas. We went to see a Cirque de Soleil. There are several different ones around town. You may want to do some research before deciding. The tickets are fairly pricey. (Tip. There are no bad seats. You can sit in the lowest priced areas and be perfectly satisfied).

Nothing says Las Vegas like food! In the old days LV was a city full of buffets priced to attract gamblers. In recent years however, it has become a world class restaurant town. I can highly recommend Picasso in the Bellagio. Boasting 5 stars it has ambience, service and incredible food and wine. We opted for a prix menu and chose wine pairing. With each new course they brought another glass of paired wine with a thourough explanation of what it was and why it was paired. The restaurant itself is adorned throughout with genuine Picasso art and is well worth walking around and admiring. The food was simply magnificent.

Las Vegas is a world class destination. If your current travel nursing job is nearby don’t leave without visitng. If it isn’t you just may want to look around for an assignment close enough to visit. You can do that by filling out one of the forms at Nursetown.com, TravelnursingUSA.com or AAAtravelnursing.com. Any of these sites allow you to tell the agencies exactly what you are looking in a travel nursing job and location.

Wichita, Kansas…meet the center of the USA.

July 22, 2008 | By Conrad Lopez | Leave a Comment

In my last post I told you a bit about the little town I spent a good part of my yourth in. It is located about 50 miles South of Wichita, a major metropolitan area providing all of the cultural and entertainment advantages a bigger city has while retaining the strong Midwest flavor and values that Kansas offers.

There are a lot of travel nursing opportunities in Wichita so I thought I’d give you a little information on the city itself.

Wichita , also known as the Air Capital of the World, is the largest city in the U.S. state of Kansas, as well as a major aircraft manufacturing hub and cultural center. In July of 2006, CNN/Money and Money magazine ranked Wichita ninth on its list of the 10 best big cities to live in the United States. The city is home to six major aircraft manufacturing companies and McConnell Air Force Base. Wichita is located in South Central Kansas on the Arkansas River, and is the county seat of Sedgwick County. It is also the home of a National Weather Service Forecast Office which serves portions of central, south-central, and southeast Kansas.

The city’s population was 344,284 at the 2000 census, and it was estimated to be 357,698 in the year 2006,[3] making it the 50th largest city in the United States.

Wichita has a humid subtropical climate  with hot, humid summers and cool to cold, dry winters. Over the course of a year, temperatures range from an average low of about 20°F (-8°C) in January to an average high of nearly 93°F (34°C) in July. The maximum temperature reaches 90°F (32°C) an average of 64 days per year and reaches 100°F (38°C) an average of 14 days per year. The minimum temperature falls below 32°F (0°C) an average of 108 days per year. Typically the first fall freeze occurs between the second week of October and mid-November, and the last spring freeze occurs between the end of March and the final week of April.

The City of Wichita is home to Botanica, The Wichita Gardens, which boasts 24 themed gardens including the popular Butterfly Garden and the award-winning Sally Stone Sensory Garden. Sedgwick County Extension Arboretum is also located in the city.

The first complete recording made by jazz musician Charlie "Bird" Parker occurred in 1940 at the Trocadero Ballroom in Wichita. During the 1950s and early 1960s, Wichita had a significant Beat movement.[9] The Wichita Jazz Festival remains a significant annual event on the national jazz calendar.

Wichita is also home to the Wichita River Festival, held each May in the Downtown and Old Town areas of the city. It is one of the longest continuous running festivals in the state of Kansas and features over 70 events, including musical entertainment, sporting events, traveling exhibits, cultural and historical activities, plays, interactive children’s events, a flea market, river events, a parade, block party, food court, fireworks and souvenirs for the roughly 370,000+ patrons who attend each year.

Blackbear Bosin’s The Keeper of the Plains at the confluence of the Arkansas and Little Arkansas Rivers by the Wichita Mid-America All Indian Center

Other major attractions of the city include the Sedgwick County Zoo, home to more than 2,500 animals of nearly 500 different species; the Old Cowtown Museum; McConnell Air Force Base; Exploration Place, a science and discovery center for all ages; the Old Town historical and entertainment district; the Mid-America All-Indian Center and Museum; and the Wichita Art Museum.

All Travel Assignments Don’t Have To Be Exotic

July 17, 2008 | By Conrad Lopez | 1 Comment

A lot of times when looking over travel nursing assignments we tend to think Hawaii!! California!! Florida!!

While there are many great assignments in those locations there are also great travel nursing jobs in places you may never have considered.

This came to mind last week as I traveled to the Midwest part of our country. Winfield, Kansas and Wichita, Kansas may never have been on your radar as a place to visit but let me tell you a bit about them. I spent a large part of my youth in Winfield, a town of about 12,000 in South Central Kansas. If there is a friendlier place on earth I don’t know where it is. The people there embody the solid Midwestern ethic that a lot of folks associate with that part of the country. They really do have ice cream socials at the churches, (there was one last Sunday at Holy Name Catholic Church). It seems like everyone in town knows everyone else.

Too many people think Kansas is "The Wizard of Oz" farm that Dorothy grew up on. The reality is that the county surrounding Winfield is gently rolling land with lots of trees and yes, farm after farm growing wheat and milking cows. In a word? Beautiful.  Inside the town you find street after street of wooden houses with big front porches and big back yards. Island Park sits like a crown jewel on the North end of town. Surrounded by water the park has ducks walking around the grounds firm in the knowledge that they are in charge and you are there to feed them. Families wile away the day fishing in the surrounding lagoon while families and groups BBQ in the pavilions. It is truly a snapshot of my youth, unchanged from 50 years ago. I was awash in nostalgia. It was a great place to grow up and I suspect it still is.

50 miles to the North is Wichita. It is surrounded by the same rolling farmland but is a "real" city with freeways and professional baseball teams and all that goes along with being a modern city of 350,000. I’ll talk about it more in my next post.

There are lots of travel nursing jobs here and I personally think any travel assignment in Wichita or any of the small surrounding communities would be a wonderful place to sample America. Give it thought!

Southern California travelers

December 13, 2007 | By Conrad Lopez | Leave a Comment

If you have an assignment in the Southern California area you are in for a treat during the holidays.

Newport Beach is located about 45 minutes South of Los Angeles. (You can take the 405 Freeway or the 5 Freeway and hook up with the 55 where you go South a few miles right into Newport).

During the holiday season for several evenings they stage the most incredible Christmas Boat Parade you will ever see. Home to multi-millionaires and their attendant yachts, Newporters go all out decorating their boats with all array of Christmas gear. After dark they head out around the bay and show off their toys while they and their friends party on board. THATS the invitation I want!

If you go, get there early. Parking can be tough. You can view the parade from either side of the bay. (The Coast Highway side, try "The Rusty Pelican", or the opposite side around the Fun Zone). Wherever you view it, you will be treated to one of the best Christmas spectacles ever.

If you are reading this post and it is NOT the Christmas season, Newport Beach is still one of the best places to visit in the Southland no matter what the season!

Happy holidays!

Northern California travelers…..here is a weekend for you

November 27, 2006 | By Conrad Lopez | Leave a Comment

Are you on an assignment in San Francisco or San Jose? If so you are in luck!

One of the best weekend (or any couple of days for that matter) side trips is just an hour or two away. Carmel, California is one of the most wonderful places on earth.

Want a beautiful beach? At the end of Ocean is one of the most incredibly beautiful beaches on the face of the earth. Pure white sand borders the blue Pacific as great waves lap a wide beach with plenty of room for sunbathing or playing. You look across Monterey Bay right at the Pebble Beach Golf Course. If you want to go there (great place to have lunch) simply get on the famous 17 mile drive. You’ll be transported through great groves and past some of the nicest and priciest homes in California. Try the Tap Room for lunch and you are instantly a millionaire for the day.

Back in town, Ocean Street and most of the side streets are filled with quaint little shops and galleries that will take you days to cover. And the restaurants? You’ll never get to them all.

Here are some suggestions:

Il Fornaio. Located in the historic Pine Inn, this upscale eatery features a great menu and one of the most vibrant bars in town.

Mission Ranch. Owned by Clint Eastwood, this property was an old seaside dairy renovated by the man himself. Moderately priced menu. The best night life in town happens at the piano bar. And who knows? Maybe Clint will stop by and play for you!

Porta Bello. On Ocean, this is one of my favorites. Somewhat pricey but wonderful service and ambiance. Italian fare.

Jack London Inn. A local hangout with a regular bar crowd, TVs with sports and moderately priced food.

Where to stay? The town is full of bed and breakfast inns. One of my personal favorites is The Sandpiper. It is a block from the beach and miles of walking trails along the ocean. A great breakfast in the morning with freshly made pasty, fresh fruits and cereals served by Bill and Marie, the innkeepers. In the afternoon you can sit in front of the roaring fireplace and sip sherry or hot tea. Rooms run from $129 and up.

The Pine Inn. Right downtown in the heart of town, an historic old hotel with red velvet wallpaper and small but very nice rooms.

For more information on any of these just go to Google and type in the name along with “Carmel.”

For more information on a travel nursing job nearby, go to www.travelnursingUSA.com and fill out the “Request information” form and I will forward it to our partner agencies.

Getting there (From either SF or San Jose just head down the 101 freeway until you reach the Monterey/Carmel turnoff South of Gilroy. Take that highway all the way to Carmel. You will see a sign directing you to turn right and it will take you rihgt onto Ocean, the main street in town).

Interested in travel nursing in San Diego?

SandiegoI’ll be heading to San Diego in a couple of weeks and will do a post on travel nursing there.

For the unitiated, San Diego may have California’s most perfect climate. It is a large metropolitan area with a myriad of recreational activity available and given it’s size, has a lot of travel nursing jobs available.

The city has the Pacific Ocean on the West, Mexico to the South, the desert to the East and North San Diego County to the North.  (North of San Diego is one of the most beautiful parts of Southern California).

Like I said, I will do a more in depth review of the actual city later but sufficer it to say that San Diego is one of the most desirable destinations in the United Sates. It’s large population coupled with near perfect weather and tons of extracurricular activities make it a real nice place to put on your list of places to look at travel nursing jobs.

If you would like to ask questions on travel nursing jobs in San Diego go here.

Consider Boston!

I am on a trip this week in the Boston area. What a great place this would be to take a travel nursing assignment. The city is full of things to do. If you are any kind of history buff you could spend your whole 13 weeks just doing that. But of course there is more.

Like, do you like to eat? Does the word lobster make your mouth water? I had a seafood casserole last night that would knock your socks off. Sports fan? Monday night I am going to Fenway Park to see the Red Sox play Detroit. It doesn’t get better then that.

And when you are not working at your travel nurse job you may want to get out of town. I drove about 75 miles down to Cape Cod. Hyannis to be exact. That is where the Kennedy’s have their famous compund. For about $16 I took a ferry for a 2 hour trip to Nantucket Island. This place is paradise! You can shop, go to the beach, eat even more, sip a little of the local brew, (Cisco Whale Tale), or rent a bike and explore the island. That is what I am going to do today. You can make it a day trip or do what I’m doing and rent a bed and breakfast. The weather is great, the ambience is terrific and the people have that Massachusetts charm.

Travel is great. Your RN degree and a bit of experience is all it takes to get you on the road. For more information on Boston travel nurse jobs (or other locations) visit my site at www.travelnursingUSA.com and fill out the request information form. -Conrad
